Introduction to OpenSpecimen

This is a REd Synchronous (live/Zoom) class.

LIVE SESSION: Monday, November 3, 2025 @12:00pm - 1:00pm, Zoom.

Class Description: Provide overview of OpenSpecimen (OS) - a powerful biobanking informatics platform subsidized by the CTSI for use at no cost which assists researchers in the organization, management and reporting of biospecimens. OS allows research teams to collect parent samples, track processed derivates and aliquots and then store them in freezers or distribute/ship - complete with audit trails.  Its power lies in the reporting functionality that allows the researcher to query and filter data using any field recorded during data entry. Learn how to manage OpenSpecimen protocols/projects with participant data and specimen data.

• Overview and introduction to  OpenSpecimen
• Learn how to initiate request to implement OS via BMIC Help Desk
• Understand how OS works synergistically with REDCap e-consent 
• Become aware of OpenSpecimen’s powerful filtering and query capabilities 

Learning Outcomes: 

• At the conclusion of this class, you will be knowledgeable of the OpenSpecimen biorepository application available to you and have an understanding of how samples are managed and associated with clinical & sample metadata

Class Duration: Total duration for synchronous classes are approximately 2 hours. Those two (2) hours will be broken down into: 

• A live session which will take approximately 1 hour (45-minute presentation and 15-minute Q&A) and; 
• Pre and Post-work activities which will take approximately 1 hour, in total.
