The University of Utah has updated and reorganized guidance regarding surrogate consent by an legally authorized representative (LAR). While the policy broadens the categories of persons allowed to provide surrogate consent, the IRB hopes to obtain more specificity in the application before allowing use of surrogate consent. The IRB hopes to guide investigators and study teams to provide more of a focused justification of the use of an LAR in research.
