The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) leads interagency efforts with higher education, the private sector, and state and local governments in developing and implementing sound science and technology policies and budgets. In 2013 the OSTP mandated federal funding agencies to develop plans to improve the management of research data. Agencies began requiring the inclusion of a data management plan (DMP) in all submitted grant proposals either as part of the proposal or as a supplementary document. The DMP should describe how researchers plan to manage and share their data throughout the project and after its completion. This presentation will provide specific and useful information for researchers on how to write a complete and effective DMP that funding agencies want to read. Discussion will include the purpose and key elements of the DMP, how to properly format the DMP, and how funding agencies use the DPM in post-award assessment.
