Participants will review the process of writing effective grant applications and assembling a good proposal to The National Institutes of Health (NIH). The basic components of a competitive grant proposal will be presented including common pitfalls to avoid in grant writing and submission. The unique structure of the NIH, the purpose of the NIH grant forms that accompany the application, and tips for transitioning to the new shorter application forms will be discussed. Strategies will be described for applicants to better position themselves to obtain NIH funding and to ensure that career development as a successful NIH-supported researcher continues beyond receiving the first grant.

At the conclusion of this class, you should be able to:
  • Describe grant writing as a good idea and grantsmanship
  • Explain what a NIH grant proposal is and identify basic elements of a grant proposal
  • Summarize 5 suggestions to help you write an NIH grant proposal that will get funded
