Full course description

THIS LISTING IS THE TBA SESSION OF THIS CLASS. To be notified when a session of this class is scheduled, or if you cannot attend the already scheduled course, please enroll in this class.

Class Description: Case Studies in the Responsible (and Irresponsible) Conduct of Research draws on classic cases from the history of science where prominent scientists encountered ethical dilemmas. The cases serve to identify the sort of ethical issues that can arise in the conduct of research, the range of (better and worse) responses that scientists have in the past and can in the future take to such issues, and the regulatory mechanisms that are in place to address these cases when infractions occur.

Objectives: At the conclusion of this class, you should be able to:

  • Analyze the various issues that fall under the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)
  • Review famous cases from the history of science involving scientists behaving responsibly and irresponsibly
  • Discuss how those famous cases would be handled under the current regulatory system in place for dealing with issues pertaining to the responsible conduct of research
