Participants will review the process of writing effective grant applications and preparing a good proposal to The National Institutes of Health (NIH). The basic components of a competitive grant proposal will be presented including common pitfalls to avoid in grant writing and submission. The unique structure of the NIH, and the strategy for increasing the likelihood of funding based on the NIH mission and administrative structure, will be discussed. Strategies will be described for applicants to better position themselves to obtain NIH funding and to ensure that career development as a successful NIH-supported researcher continues beyond receiving the first grant.
