Class Description: Designed for clinical research personnel conducting financial feasibility of a study or negotiating contract language, this class will describe the purpose of a consistent billing plan and study procedure analysis. The needs and requirements for document consistency and the Medicare Coverage Analysis (MCA) will be explained. Definitions of relevant terms and descriptions will be provided including “protocol billing grid,” “Standard of Care (SOC) costs,” and “routine costs.” The relationship of the MCA to federal regulation will be discussed.

Class Objectives: 

  • Discuss the Federal laws and regulations that govern research billing
  • Explain how research billing compliance protects our institution and our patients
  • Discuss items and services can and should be billed to insurance during a clinical trial
  • Articulate where to find University resources that can help with coverage analysis

Class Duration: Total duration for synchronous classes are approximately 2 hours. Those two (2) hours will be broken down into: 

  • A live session which will take approximately 1 hour (45-minute presentation and 15-minute Q&A) and; 
  • Pre and Post-work activities which will take approximately 1 hour, in total.
